EDUCATION
In
education, Kankol-Alappadamba Panchayat has got its own heritage.
It has helped a lot to strengthen the National Movement against
the British rule as well as for the social revolution.
The
institutions started by members of the Upper Caste for providing
education to their family members, later on helped a lot for providing
education for students from the lower castes.
Much
before the advent of official educational institutions, private
schools (Vidya Kendram) were set up at different places.
In Kankol area, the private institution was started at Kundayam
Kovval by Shri C.K. Narayanan Nair and Shri Manja Kunhirama Poduval.
Later on south of Kankol Temple, the Valiyachal Family started
another school.
In
Alappadamba, private schools (Vidya Kendram) were available at
Erinjikkizhil and Eyyanthotti. Shri Thidiyil
Kaiprath Kammaranezhuthachan and at Koottapunna, Shri Ponnariyan
Sipayi managed the institutions. Over and above, at Thekke
Madam, under the supervision of late Shri Vishnu Sharma, and the services
of Shri T.K. Ramar Gurukkal at Vadavanthur in this respect are worth
mentioning.
The
private schools helped a lot to know the people about the importance
of education as well as it paved the way to start official educational
institutions.
The
first official school of Kankol-Alappadamba Panchayat founded
in 1915 is Kankol Aided Lower Primary School. The people
behind that institution were Shri Panayanthatta Valiyachal Veetil Ananthan
Nambiar, Shri Narayanan Nambiar and Shri Govindan Nambiar.
Later
on in 1926, Aided Lower Primary School, Vadassery, (1927) Vishnu
Sharma
Lower Primary School, Kuruveli and (1934) S.V.L.P. School, Alakkad
were established.
On
completion of the Lower Primary School, for Higher Education the
people depended on Karivellur Manyaguru Higher Elementary School
and Payyanur Board High School. Higher fee and lack of transportation
facility, hindered most of the people from getting higher education.
During this time, (1938) Shri P. Narayanan Nair started
a Higher Elementary School at Alakkad.
The
great magnanimity of late Shri M.V.M. Kunhivishnu Nambisan, who
donated the Mathil Higher Elementary School to the government
paved the way for setting up of a High School in Mathil (1957).
This School is recently renamed as MVM Kunhivishnu Nambisan
Smaraka Govt. Higher Secondary School. The first Head Master of
Mathil Government High School was Shri P.O. Chathukutty Nambiar.

NARAYANAN NAIR SMARAKA (MEMORIAL) U
P SCHOOL, ALAKKAD
The
Narayanan Nair Smaraka U.P. School (N.N.S.U.P School), Alakkad has
got its own historical importance as far as the political and
developmental activities of Kankol-Alappadamba Panchayat to that
matter Payyanur area is concerned.
The
history of education in North Malabar has got strong influence in
the agricultural movement of this region. The great leaders of
freedom struggle of this area who started their work through
agricultural movement had a broad and sincere vision towards the
advantage of education among common masses. Late Shri P.
Narayanan Master was one among them who understood the importance
of education and started this institution.
The
national movement and agricultural movement have made vast changes
in the social, cultural and educational sectors. After lower
primary education, the people of Kankol-Alappadamba Panchayat were
dependent either on Manyaguru Higher Elementary School at
Karivellur or Payyanur Board High School for higher education.
However, higher fees and lack of transportation facilities
hindered most of the people to get higher education. Under this
situation, late Shri Narayanan Master who was very active in the
social and education movement had his own insight and started this
institution on 15th December, 1938 and upgraded it as a
full fledged UP School in 1941.

This
institution grown very dramatically mainly because of the fact
that it not only catered the pupil from Kankol-Alappadamba
Panchayat but the students of other neighbouring villages.
Late Shri Narayanan Master was the founder head master of this
institution. He underwent various hardships to sustain this
institution. Shri Narayanan Master retired as Head Master of this
institution in March, 1974.
Shri
Narayanan Master was one of the best teachers in Payyanur area.
He expired in 1989 and in his fond memory, the school was renamed
as Narayanan Nair Smaraka U.P. School.
