The
land of Kankol Alappadamba has got ancient history. The name Kankol-Alappadamba
was originated from the great Yaga performed by Kapila Maharshi
in this land. Kapila Maharshi selected "Kapilan Kovil" for his
Yaga, which later on transformed into Kankol and north end of
the Yaga-sala "Vadakke-Cheri" transformed into Vadassery; the
place where people sat for the meal ("Unda Kovval") transformed
into Kundayam Kovval; the place where cows were accommodated ("Aala")
later on transformed into Alakkad; where the coal and ashes were
deposited after the Yaga transformed into Karimkuzhi; where the
important people were accommodated ("Mahadil") later on transformed
into Mathil; where the "Kuri" was kept transformed into Kuruveli;
where the tree "Alu" was planted transformed into Alappadamba
and where the drinking water was stored and distributed ("Ettu
Kudicha") later on transformed into Ettukudukka.
Kapila Maharshi
went to Kottiyoor from Kankol. Even today, the "Pradhama Sthaneeyar"
of Kottiyoor is from the Thekkedath Family of Kankol.
The life
style of the people of Kankol-Alappadamba was mainly influenced
by agricultural and related products. The well known landlords
of this area were Thazakkattumana, Vengayil Nayanar, Manippuzha
Illam, Alappadamba Thekke Madam, Marangattillam etc. Also Kankol,
Someswari, Deviyottu, Melukulangara, and Kuruveli Devaswams were
owners of land. Under the reign of Chirakkal Thampuran, these
areas were part of Payyanur.
The main religions of this place
are Hindu and Muslim. However, there are a quite good number of
Christian families. Among Hindu Community, different casts which
could be found are Namboothiri, Nambisan, Nambiar, Nair, Pothuval,
Ezhava, Maniyani, Vaniyar, Viswakarma, Kallassari, Ganikar, Vannathan,
Kollan, Chaklian, Pulayan, Mavilan, Velar, Malayar, Vannan, Chinkathan.
All these people co-existed peacefully adopting their own rituals
and rites.
